Noel pressed his lips together to hide his disdain and keep the commentary on the tip of his tongue. Bile and the stale taste of beer swirled around his mouth. His room wasn’t a thing like he’d left it. Baby toys and a crib had taken the place of his bed. The walls weren’t pale blue, but a cheery pink. A bug-eyed unicorn smiled down at him from an enormous poster. He wrinkled his nose. The scent of used diapers and thick perfume wafted throughout the room.

“We needed a place for the baby to sleep.” Joan squeezed his arm again. “Lauren will be so pleased to meet her uncle. She looks at pictures of you all the time. I’m teaching her to say your name.”

“Lauren?” He feigned ignorance. “I assume that’s the baby who took over my room. Or you’ve chosen to adopt.”

“Be serious. I’m sure Sophie and Mario wrote to you. If they didn’t, the harlot probably told you all about your niece. She can’t leave well enough alone.”

“The harlot?”

“You know full well who I mean. We don’t speak her name in this house.” Joan notched her chin. “Foolish girl, thinks she runs the world. I’ll tell you one thing, she learned when she crossed me. I won’t stand for her antics.”

“I’m not getting in the middle of your tiff.” Noel shook his head. Other than Mario’s room, there wasn’t anywhere else to crash. His father had never had the den he’d wanted and the couch wasn’t made for sleeping. He licked his lips. Under the aftertaste of beer, a hint of Cindy’s strawberry lip-gloss remained. Even if she had turned down Mario in a nasty manner, she didn’t deserve the shunning Joan insisted on imposing.

“Don’t you think you’re being hard on her? She did lose her parents.”

“She would use that as leverage. The girl can’t think beyond the end of her nose, but she can surely find trouble.” Jean waggled her finger. “But she’s not my concern. Your brother and Sophie will be here soon. They can’t wait to see you.” She clapped her hands. “I need to tend to the cake.”

His father appeared in the doorway, head down and hands on his hips. He waited a pregnant moment before speaking. “Your mother was hurt when Cindy turned down Mario. Took it as a personal insult.”

“I suppose you don’t want me to see her, either?”

“I never said that.”

“I’m twenty-four. I can handle myself.”

Karl shook his head. “Remember your place in my house.” His eyes narrowed and he sighed. “Cindy Stephens isn’t what she seems. She’s got a wild streak in her that will take a lot to tame.”

Wild streak? Karl had to be pulling his leg. Noel leaned on the door frame. “Dad, I can’t be with the woman I left behind because the pictures over the mantle tell me she shacked up with Mario. Now you tell me, who is the wild one?”

“Blunt. You’ve become blunter.” Karl nudged Noel into the middle of the cluttered pink room. “I don’t care who you see.
